The Horry County Museum

Conway, South Carolina

This adaptive re-use project consisted of converting what was a former school house, built in 1905, into a museum and exhibition space for the Horry County Museum.  The project required an extensive renovation from foundations and structural framing to upgrading mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire suppression systems.  Restoring the structural integrity of the building required shoring of the existing floors and roof, as well as installing helical piers, new foundations, and structural steel. One of the client’s main goals was to retain as much of the original school’s history as possible.  This was accomplished, in part, by reclaiming the wainscot and hardwood flooring.  The wainscot was carefully removed and re-installed in the hallways and the flooring was sanded and sealed to its original state.

For all phases, the scope of work included asbestos abatement, general construction, HVAC, controls, electrical, auxiliary systems, PA system, plumbing, fire protection systems, as well as providing all necessary cabling and equipment for voice, data, security, and alarm services.
